Upscaled Minivan with Lots of Style!
A first for the minivan sector, the new Toyota Sienna is the only model to be offered with a hybrid drivetrain. In the last few years, we've become accustomed to limited minivan mileage, but the new Sienna breaks that norm. According to our tests, it has a range of more than 500 miles per tank and can get nearly 40 mpg. Pretty outstanding, right?
The Toyota Sienna Hybrid offers a fantastic combined fuel efficiency of 35 mpg - according to EPA estimates - thanks to the new AWD system. According to the EPA, its front-wheel drive variants have a combined fuel efficiency rating of 36 mpg. A Dream Ride
Driving the Toyota Sienna is a dream! The Sienna feels steady and sure-footed in curves. It is simple to park and maneuver in confined spaces thanks to the easy and moderately-weighted steering. The brake pedal is a little touchy, but the brakes also provide adequate stopping force. The suspension absorbs most road irregularities, resulting in a smooth and pleasant ride, especially in versions with 17- and 18-inch wheels. The optional 20-inch wheels do actually cause the interior to shock and shake a little more.
Like most minivans, the Sienna is a master of utility. Behind the third row is a large well for storing cargo with hooks on the back of the seats. The second-row seats move forward to provide excellent luggage storage, while the third row can be manually folded and stowed flat into the floor.
It is also a good idea to have personal item storage. Sixteen cupholders, multi-level door pockets, and a sizable shelf between the front passengers, which is ideal for a bag, are all present and accounted for. Designed for ease, even the mounting hooks for car seats are simple to reach. The seven-passenger Sienna has four, whereas the eight-passenger has five. Children using booster seats can easily utilize the buckles as well.
Interior Features
The interior of the 2022 Toyota Sienna reflects its sleek look and is wonderfully clean and contemporary. The dashboard flows gracefully into a central console that resembles a bridge and boasts a dramatic design and various soft-touch plastic surfaces. There are several functional storage spaces and numerous cup holders (18 total).
Every 2022 Toyota Sienna is equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen. The driver can easily access this display because it is situated in a prominent, convenient location on the dashboard. It supports Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay, which has simple menus and can also display the interface from your smartphone on the screen. The audio and temperature control come with physical buttons and knobs to avoid tapping or swiping to change every setting.
The Toyota Sienna is in its third year as part of the current generation of exclusively hybrid vehicles. The 25th Anniversary Edition Siennas are available in Celestial Silver or Wind Chill Pearl exterior paint as part of Toyota's celebration of the namesake vehicle's 25th anniversary this year. The special model may be identified by its unique 20-inch wheels, roof rails, black exterior badging, and external mirrors with built-in puddle lights.
Engine Capabilities
Unlike other iterations of Toyota's family van, the Sienna is only available as a hybrid. This hybrid powertrain boasts two electric motors, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and an EVA transmission giving the 2022 Toyota Sienna 245 horsepower (CVT). You have the option of choosing both a front-wheel and all-wheel drive.
Thanks to the electric motor's instant torque, the hybrid system propels the Sienna off the line and through town with style, but once you leave the city boundaries, this agility starts to wane. When getting up to highway speeds, the four-cylinder engine drones noisily and has little passing power, especially when hauling a full load of people. Eight seconds are needed to go from 0 to 60 mph. This ain't a drag racing machine, but that's not why it was designed. The majority of class rivals have more powerful V6 engines, but, once again: it does what it needs to do well.
Gas Milage
The EPA rates the new hybrid Sienna's combined mileage at 36 mpg (36 city/36 highway). And it can do much more than that. With a front-wheel-drive Sienna, we far exceeded the EPA predictions after traveling almost 500 miles. Overall, we got 42.7 mpg, including 44.8 mpg on our little over 115-mile mixed-driving assessment route.
