Introducing the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq
Breaking the Mold
Hyundai set out to make waves in the hybrid sector by designing a car that breaks the standard mold of golf cart ride quality and futuristic styling. The Ioniq comes in three different configurations all with a modern yet grounded designs. Hyundai also made waves with the Ioniq Hybrid Blue that was rated as the most fuel-efficient non-plug-in car in America by the EPA (58 MPG Combined) and the Ioniq electric which the EPA rated as the most efficient vehicle sold in America (136 MPGe).
Exterior
Three Distinct Choices
The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq maintains a sedan shape while delivering an amazing hybrid experience. Each of the three model choices offers slightly different exterior styling. These subtle styling cues accommodate the larger cargo area as well as help reduce wind resistance.
Beautiful Styling
Hyundai wanted to steer clear of futuristic Sci-Fi styling and designed the Ioniq to have a modern look that still fits the rest of the Hyundai lineup. The exterior of the hatchback has sleek gloss black accents and angled headlights with signature LED daytime running lights.
Strong Body Lines
The body lines that run down the length of the vehicle slope down toward the front of the vehicle and give the Ioniq the appearance that it is ready to launch at all times. The sharp body lines in the hood adds to this sporty look and draw the eye to the sleek front grill.
Unique Grill
While the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid have similar front grill styling the Ioniq Electric features a gloss black front grill that improves the aerodynamics and adds a noticeably modern look.
Interior
Sustainable Materials
Even in base trim, the cabin of the new Hyundai Ioniq is attractive and comfortable. To help keep your focus on the road, the steering wheel is equipped with the most essential controls right at your fingertips. Silver accents are featured throughout the cabin including on the climate controls which keep everything simple and easy. The high-quality sustainable materials and overall design make the interior of the Ioniq spacious and luxurious.
7 inch Infotainment System
A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard in all models and includes Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The cleanly designed infotainment system and climate controls make it simple to change the song or climate setting quickly while keeping your attention on the road.
Spacious Cabin
The Ioniq can fit a generous amount of luggage and some clever tricks have been employed by Hyundai to maximize the available space in the cabin. The hatchback design and 60/40 rear folding seats allow for plenty of storage area
Sustainable Materials
Hyundai elected to use sustainable materials in the interior of this electric vehicle including volcanic rock for natural plastic and a Bio-Fabric made of sugar cane. These environmentally friendly materials are light and comfortable as well as being very durable for rougher use.
Performance
Efficiency Paired With Performance
Hyundai wanted to change the perception of all hybrids being slow moving cars that aren't fun to drive. They did a great job with the Ioniq of designing for ride-quality and performance on the road as well as efficiency. The Ioniq Electric and Plug-In Electric both have exhilarating acceleration that you feel the second you press the pedal down. Not only are the electric motors very fun to drive, all three options have a multi-link suspension that provides a smooth and enjoyable ride.
Ioniq Hybrid
The 2019 Ioniq Hybrid Blue is highly fuel-efficient with a combined rating of 58 mpg. The Hybrid model also drives better than your average hybrid with a lot of focus being put into the ride quality. The Multi-link suspension is paired with MacPherson shock absorbers for added performance and comfort on the road.
Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid features an electric motor, a 1.6-liter engine, and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The unique drivetrain uses both the engine and electric motor but in most cases it will just use one or the other strategically. For example, the drivetrain will draw power to accelerate from a stop from the electric motor and will use the gas engine to maintain coasting speeds.
Ioniq Electric
The Electric model has a 124-range and its energy efficient rating of 136 MPGe makes it the most efficient vehicle sold in the U.S. to date. This model charges very quickly at a 240V power outlet and you can get your vehicle fully charged in a little more than four hours. However, if you are using a 120V outlet, the charging time will be extended to about 8.5 to 9 hours, perfect for overnight charging.
Safety
High-Strength Steel Frame
The Ioniq is built on a high-strength steel frame with use of weight-saving aluminum and aerospace-grade adhesives. This is paired with a standard advanced airbag system that comes with side curtain airbags for the front and rear seat as well as side impact airbags for the driver and front-passenger.
Proven Safety Performance
Both the plug-in hybrid and hybrid were named a 'Top Safety Pick' by the IIHS. In addition to scoring well on all individual crash tests the Hyundai Ioniq is equipped with child seat anchors and airbags for all passengers. The Ioniq offers a number of active safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind-spot / rear cross-traffic monitors on the upper level trims.
